Brisbane all-abilities parks are thankfully becoming more widespread. The addition of Liberty Swings or something similar in many parks across the city is giving many Brisbane Kids and adults in wheelchairs the opportunity to experience the pleasure of having a real swing in the park.
What is a Liberty Swing?
The Liberty Swing is an incredible Australian innovation which has been used in many parks and playgrounds around the world since 2003. The Liberty Swing is safe, therapeutic and easy to use, enabling those in wheelchairs the ability to swing and have fun.
To use the swing users in a wheelchair will need to be wheeled up the ramp and into position before the wheels of the wheelchair are safely locked into position and the rider secured. After being fully secured the ramp is lowered and the swing can be activated.
In addition to the Liberty Swing, there are other types of swings capable of welcoming a wheelchair. One such swing is the we-go-swing.
Like the Liberty Swing, the we-go-swing is designed to be accessible and used by wheelchair users. To make it even more inclusive, no key is needed and a wheelchair user can ride on the swing with one or two other people. It is more of a gentle swing, but a swing nonetheless.

Accessing Liberty Swings
Access to the Liberty Swing in your favourite park is generally via a key.
The Master Locksmiths Access Key (MLAK) system is a Master Locksmiths initiative which began in 1994, allowing those with a disability, access to dedicated public facilities including the Liberty Swings.
You must apply to receive a MLAK, meeting eligibility criteria and paying a small fee. For further details please visit the Master Locksmiths website.
Alternatively, a key can often be loaned from the local council or an approved venue nearby. Details for each swing can be found onsite or by contacting your local council.
Note – a valid form of identification is often required when borrowing a key and are usually only available on weekdays during business hours.
Be sure to follow all safety instructions when utilising the Liberty Swing, especially standing in the correct position when the swing in moving.

I believe the liberty swing that was at Pine Rivers Park Strathpine and still listed on your site as having one is the same one that has been relocated to Pelican Park Clontarf
Ngaire Stirling
Hi Catherine. We mentioned this to someone at council and it was relayed to us that the liberty swing at Pine Rivers was donated to a local special school. I am pretty certain the liberty swing was at Pelican Park at the same time the one at Pine Rivers Park was still there (just looking back at our photo stamps). The view of the one at Pelican Park is pretty spectacular- the perfect placement!
