What’s On At Mt Coot-tha Lookout For Families
Brisbane Lookout at scenic Mt Coot-tha is a favourite destination for both locals and visitors alike, offering breathtaking views day and night. The lookout has been in operation for more than a century, yet there is so much more on offer than just the amazing views.
Right at the top of the lookout, you can grab yourself either a quick bite to eat at the casual dining venue of Kuta Cafe, offering cafe style meals or quick offerings, such as ice cream, snacks and cold drinks. Or you may wish to turn your dining experience up a notch with the fine dining offered at the Summit Restaurant. Here you will find an extensive A la Carte menu or a range of speciality offerings to suit the occasion. A popular venue also for weddings and functions, with amazing views on offer while you dine.
In the surrounding areas of the Brisbane Lookout, you will find a range of activities and family friendly locations to make the Mt Coot-tha area a perfect day trip for any age.
A short drive down from the lookout is the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha, recognised as Queensland’s premier subtropical botanic gardens. Open daily, with free entry and regular special events and exhibitions on throughout the year. There is also a restaurant in the gardens, offering a range of meals to suit all preferences, casual or otherwise. The Brisbane Planetarium is just next door to these gardens which is why this 3 stop journey is such a wonderful day out for families.
The Brisbane Botanic Gardens are also home to the Sir Thomas Brisbane Planetarium, offering informative and entertaining programs for children and adults alike, with a their optical star projector, used to recreate a stunning realistic night sky on a 12.5 metre diameter projection dome. Mt Coot-tha itself is also home to the Brisbane Astronomical Society, who offer free monthly viewing nights once a month from the Lookout.
J.C. Slaughter Falls within the Mt Coot-tha Reserve offers a natural setting for picnics and BBQs, as well as plenty of walking tracks to suit all levels of fitness. The grounds are expansive enough to provide plenty of picnic locations without the feeling of being crowded, which basic facilities such as toilets, tables and covered BBQ areas. While the falls themselves are not always flowing, they are still a worthy sight, especially in the wet season. Recently there has been funding allocated to upgrade all the walking tracks to keep an eye out for this!
The Brisbane Lookout at Mt Coot-tha is a great place for a family day out, with something to appeal to all ages, complete with great views, fresh air and educational opportunities. Even better is in the evening when it comes alive, truly a magical way to view our wonderful Brisbane City.
