Point of Difference: Wavell Heights Kindergarten features a natural outdoor environment
As you walk through the gates of the low set kindergarten building you will see the two large open-plan rooms, and just beyond the rooms, you are greeted with a wide and spacious outdoor play environment that is so loved by the families who attend.
The outdoor environment is complete with a beautiful carpet of green grass and several large trees which provide ample shade year-round. The gorgeous built and natural environments at Wavell Heights Kindergarten include a sandpit, a huge wooden fort, monkey bars, swings, a dirt and mud patch, vegetable and flower gardens, a fairy garden and a bike path for the children to enjoy.
The indoor environment is an inviting sanctuary for children. Educators carefully select and craft quality resources and open-ended spaces that are designed specifically for children between three to five years of age. The built and natural spaces and equipment available to the children give the kindergarten an old-world charm, allowing the children the freedom to explore, create and initiate their own play experiences.
At Wavell Heights Kindergarten the children, staff and families are acknowledged as co-constructors of the curriculum. At the heart of this is warm and respectful relationships between the educators, the children and their families. These relationships are viewed as an integral and essential component of the teaching and learning process.
Children are given the time and space to explore their environment through play, to make discoveries and to consolidate their learning through many “hands-on” experiences as well as interest-based learning. The educators believe that this is how children become intrinsically motivated to learn. At Wavell Heights Kindergarten your child will experience many opportunities to explore, solve problems, develop friendships, use their creativity, and play. You will see the educators engaging the children at their level. They take the time to know and listen to their children so that they are able to scaffold their learning appropriately. They guide and support children to be curious, capable and collaborative learners. Educators believe children are powerful learners and active citizens.
Wavell Heights Kindergarten uses three main guiding documents, the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG), the national Early Years Learning Framework for Australia (EYLF), and C&Ks new The C&K Curriculum Approach. These frameworks link to the National Quality Framework for early childhood education and care and provide the educators with a strong basis for the high-quality program.
The educators recognise the importance of taking time to prepare children for a transition to school and a life-long love of learning. They have strong working relationships with the local schools and value the importance of providing a smooth and positive transition to school for the children.
The teaching staff
All four kindergarten programs are delivered by university-qualified Early Childhood Teachers and qualified Assistants who have many years of experience in teaching kindergarten-aged children. The teaching staff work with the same group of children each day to provide the children with stability and continuity during the year. The warmth and passion they have for the children is evident in the quality of the learning, the connection they have with the children and the smiles on the children’s faces.
It is the long-term, experienced and caring educators who make a strong foundation for the service, children, families and the wider community. The leadership and management team at Wavell Heights Kindergarten provide a well-established and motivational workplace which promotes a strong organisational culture and encourages continuous professional learning.
