The State Library of Queensland is a must see for every Brisbane Kid and their family, full of amazing books and also home to The Corner which is a fabulous space that offers free kids activities all year round. However, by far the best time to visit State Library is during the school holidays as they have a great range of free activities to keep everyone entertained and busy for hours.

In December and January, holiday fun is all about technology, stories and play at the State Library of Queensland’s Summer Festival which boasts a mix of free and ticketed events that make up the State Library’s biggest school holiday program ever! From classic storytelling and arts and craft to digital workshops in  coding, robotics, virtual reality, augmented reality and 360 film-making, the Festival has all ages groups and interests covered. Brisbane Kids can also have fun with creative writing and making picture books as well as exploring the free exhibitions and interactive installations.

Listed below are all of the 2017/18 Summer Festival workshops. We are pretty sure your Brisbane Kid will have a hard time choosing with all of these options, and may in fact end up booking into more than one! Activities are designed especially for under 8’s, 8-11 and 12-16 year olds, plus there are also plenty of events for all ages. Just make sure you book in quickly to secure your place before the workshops book out.

Just keep in mind that the schedule changes daily and will continue evolving throughout the holidays, so make sure you visit the State Library often and discover the latest chapter unfolding at the Summer Festival.

Summer Festival SLQ Storytime

 

There are lots of fun activities that The State Library of Queensland have included on their Summer Festival program for 2017/18 which are free and require no bookings. These include:

  • Story Lab Arcade: Brisbane Kids will love this interactive space that combines technology and play in the form of remix animations, films in 360 degrees and virtual worlds.
    • Dates: 25th November – 22 January 2018, 10am – 5pm daily
    • Ages: 6 years and over
  • Imagination Playscape and Storytime: An area designed for Brisbane kids and their parents in which they can design, create and build together and attend one of 3 storytime sessions each day in which the storyteller will bring the picture book to life.
    • Dates:18th December – 21st January 2018, 10am – 3pm with storytime at 10.30am, 12pm and 1.30pm daily
    • Ages: 0 – 12 years
  • Play Publishing House:  Brisbane Kids will get the chance to create their own 8 page picture book and then use the book reproduction robot so they can take home a copy and also leave one in the library for others to read.
    • Dates: 18th December -21st January,  10am-3pm daily.
    • Ages: all ages
  • Tech Play Pop-Up: Throughout the Festival, this space will change its range of digital installations, events and showcases, allowing kids to be constantly entertained by the interactive big screen.
    • Dates: 18th December – 21st January 2018, 10am- 3pm daily
    • Ages: all ages

Please note that parents must be supervising their kids aged 12 years and under at all times during the workshops and activities.

The State Library of Queensland have included some awesome workshops on their on their Summer Festival program which are free but do require you to book into a session. Make sure you book in ASAP as these workshops will book out quickly!

  • We E-Publish: Brisbane Kids can make their own picture book using the We e-Publish app and then publish their book to take home and read.
  • Robopets:  Work with the amazing team at Tech Girl Movement to design, construct and train a robotic pet made from Lego and Edison Robots.
  • Maze VR : Design and then enter your own real world ball maze and use apps to transform it into a world that the whole family can explore.
  • Cubetto: Learn the basics of coding as you are introduced to a little wooden robot named Cubetto (and no screens!)

Boys Storylab Workshops SLQ Summer Festival

Storylab Workshops are extremely popular each school holidays. The workshops range in price from $35 for a 5 hour workshop to $120 for a 3 day intensive program.  Make sure you book in ASAP as these workshops will book out quickly!

This year, Storylab workshops include the Virtual Reality Club, App Animations Mash-Up, Capturing 360 Degree Perspectives, Robocreatures, Duct Tape Island, Picture this and Character Craft. These workshops are suitable for Brisbane Kids aged 8 – 16 years.

How to get to The State Library of Queensland

The State Library Queensland is easy to get to, and easy to find, at Stanley Place, South Brisbane. Those using public transport can catch a bus to Cultural Centre Busway or the GOMA bus stop, or a ferry and alight at the South Bank CityCat stop. You can also catch a train to South Brisbane train station which is within easy walking distance of the State Library. If traveling by car, then parking is available at the Cultural Centre car parks, South Bank Parklands or Brisbane Exhibition Centre (parking fees apply).
