Story Lab at State Library of Queensland – Holiday Workshops for kids aged 8-16 years

School holidays for Brisbane Kids aged 8-16 years of age just got a little more exciting with the release of the ever-popular school holiday workshops – Story Lab at State Library of Queensland. These amazing workshops combine the creativity of storytelling with technology to create unique and interesting workshops that kids scramble to attend. There is so much to choose from, and, no matter what your Brisbane Kid is interested in, Story Lab at State Library have them covered. Offering a jam packed program full of  gaming, robotics, engineering, cartooning and manga, plus brand new workshops in Ozobot, Unity 3D, zines, blogging and more, the best bit is that most of the workshops allow attendees to keep their creations when they go home. This allows kids to keep working on the project and expand on what was learnt during their hands-on workshop.

Listed below are all of the 2016 Story Lab workshops. We are pretty sure your Brisbane Kid will have a hard time choosing with all of these options, and may in fact end up booking into more than one! Just make sure you book in quickly to secure your place before the workshops book out.

Story Lab at State Library – Summer 2016 Workshops

State Library of Queensland Story Lab Holiday Workshops LEGO

  • DIY Animation: This amazing hands on workshop will enable Brisbane Kids to bring their favourite toy or an everyday object to life through the magic of animation techniques that will be learnt during the morning.
    • $40 per person
    • 11th January @ 9.30am-12.30pm (8-11 years)
    • 12th January @ 9.30am-12.30pm (11-14 years)
  • Introduction to Zine: Brisbane Kids can get creative and channel their inner- journalist as they make their very own magazine plus they will get to take a copy of their creation home with them.
    • $30 per person
    • 11th January @ 1.30pm-4.30pm (8-11 years)
    • 12th January @ 1.30pm- 4.30pm (11-14 years)
  • Ozobot Challenges: In teams, kids will learn how to use the programs Ozobot and Ozoblocky to create their own mazes, playgrounds and racetracks and then learn to move their Ozobot’s around the challenges they have created.
    • $35 per person

    • 20th January @ 1.30pm- 4.30pm (11-14 years)
    • 22nd January @ 1.30pm-4.30pm (8-11 years)
  • Scratch Games + MaKey MaKey: Using the software programs Scratch and MaKey MaKey, kids will get to create their every own game complete with sprites, obstacles, prizes and levels. They will then learn how to control their sprites using MaKey MaKey and conductive materials. Best bit is you will get to take your game home on a USB to continue developing the game at home.

  • Cartooning: Brisbane Kids will be able to learn how to sketch cartoons and caricatures from the one and only Cartoon Dave. Experienced in cartooning, Dave will have all the kids drawing animals, movie stars, sporting heroes and more, plus every child gets their own sketch pad, pencils and pencil case to take home with them.
    • $35 per person
    • 14th January @ 10am- 12.30pm (11-14 years)
    • 15th January @ 10am-12.30pm (8-11 years)
  • Build It, Test It, Break It: Learn from the professionals how engineers build and test the strength of bridges. In teams, everyone will build their own bridge and see just how strong it is by putting their creation through rigorous testing.
    •  $35 per person
    • 14th January @ 1.30pm-4.30pm (11-14 years)
    • 15th January @ 1.30pm-4.30pm (8-11 years)
  • Unity 3D: This amazing workshops see participants creating their very own 3D game and will allow attendees to create a virtual world complete with an interactive treasure hunt or game all on a USB stick to take home and play
    • $70 per person

    • 15th January @ 10am-12.30pm (8-11 years)
  • Manga: Learn from the experts how to draw these unique Japanese style comic book characters and take home your own sketch pad, pencils and pencil case.
    • $30 per person
    • 18th January @ 1.30pm-3.30pm (8-11 years)
    • 19th January @ 1.30pm-3.30pm (11-14 years)
  • Robotics- Lego Mindstorms:  Brisbane Kids will work together in groups to create their very own robot from LEGO Mindstorms and then learn how to control him so he can  navigate his way through a number of set challenges.
    • $35 per person

  • LED + Origami Stories: Brisbane Kids will get to create their very own unique piece of artwork to take home using origami and LED lights to illuminate the artwork. Kids will use circuits stickers and copper tape in order to create their own basic circuit with the LED lights.
    • $30 per person

    • 22nd January @ 9.30am-12.30pm (8-11 years)
  • The Art Of Blogging: Brisbane Kids will learn from writer, Steph Bowe, how to create their own blog, develop their writing style and find their very own blogging voice in order to have a success blog in today’s blogging world. Everyone will get to take home a copy of their blog on a USB.
    • $70 per person
    • 23rd January @ 9.30am-3.30pm (13-16 years)
