Where to go Maternity Shopping in Brisbane

maternity clothing Brisbane

In our mothers’ generation, dedicated maternity wear stores were unheard of, and maternity style was limited to “tent dresses”, unless you were able to sew your own clothes. These days, women have much greater choice in maternity wear with hundreds of styles selling online and maternity stores dotted throughout Brisbane. Brisbane Kids have put together a guide to our city’s best maternity wear retailers and some tips to help you find clothes that suit you and your bump.

Department stores

Most of the big department stores, including Big W, Kmart, Target, and David Jones stock a range of maternity clothing. When you shop for maternity wear, you can generally chose the same size you would have before pregnancy. If you are expecting twins (or triplets!) you may need to go up a size to allow more room in the belly and bust area. Department stores are usually well priced and are therefore great for stocking up on basics, like black pants, that can be worn during the day, evening and at work. Plain tops that can be dressed up with accessories are a good idea too.

Chain stores

Jeanswest and Just Jeans have a great range of maternity jeans and Pumpkin Patch also sells maternity clothing, including jeans and denim skirts. You can wear just about anything with denim, so it is an essential purchase for every pregnant woman. Try wearing jeans with a t-shirt during the day, and then dress them up with a pretty top, heels (if you can!) and accessories in the evening.

Boutique retailers

There are a number of stores in Brisbane that specialise in maternity clothing, and offer a more personalised service, including:

These stores are great for investing in at least one outfit that will make you look and feel like you are glowing. Whether it’s an elegant dress or a funky top, it’s worth finding an item that you will love to wear. Another bonus is that these stores stock clothes made especially for pregnant women, so they offer more support and comfort where you need it, as opposed to just buying bigger sized clothes from regular stores.

Underwear specialists

A woman’s bust size will usually grow several sizes during pregnancy so you will have to purchase new bras. Many women wait until the last two months of pregnancy to buy breastfeeding bras, to ensure they get the right size. It is a good idea to be professionally fitted, if possible. In addition to the shops listed above, the following stores also sell maternity underwear:

Shoes

Your feet will start to swell during the course of your pregnancy so choose comfortable, quality shoes. Slip-ons are great because you don’t have to bend over to put them on. If you prefer a bit of height, opt for low heels or mules but make sure that they give you total support and comfort.

Shop online

If pregnancy is leaving you feeling too tired to shop, all of the stores listed above offer online shopping. Milk and Love is a mostly online boutique, specialising in nursing tops, dresses, maternity wear, and much more, all made with natural fabrics like bamboo, organic cotton, modal and tencel. Also worth a look is Bellicious, a local designer from the Sunshine Coast that sells online and at Brisbane markets and Sacha Drake, a Brisbane designer with a gorgeous range of dressier maternity options in both her Paddington boutique and online store. And of course, don’t forget www.ebay.com.au and www.gumtree.com.au for online shopping, including some bargain second hand items.

Gifts and baby showers

If you have a loved one who is pregnant, why not buy them a gift voucher from one of these Brisbane businesses? It would make a perfect baby shower, birthday, Mother’s Day or Christmas gift for any expecting mother.
