Imagine uninterrupted imaginative play and investigation in a natural landscape of shady climbing trees, digging dirt patches and vegetable gardens, with free ranging chickens and ducks, and horses grazing over the fence. That is how the children of Gan Gani Community Kindergarten play and learn every day.
Gan Gani Community Kindergarten in Fig Tree Pocket
Gan Gani Community Kindergarten is nestled between the Queensland Equestrian Centre and Brisbane Montessori School (BMS) in the leafy river suburb of Fig Tree Pocket. Here, surrounded by acres of rolling greenscape, two groups of 22 children engage in a play-based curriculum, that explores and builds upon children’s natural curiosity in the areas of literacy, numeracy, science, creativity and sustainability, while nurturing their resilience and social/emotional readiness for school.
Children attend a five-day fortnight during school terms, (Monday, Tuesday and alternate Wednesdays or Thursday, Friday and alternate Wednesdays). Each group has a university qualified Early Childhood teacher and diploma qualified Educator who have dedicated their careers to providing the highest quality early education to the children of Brisbane’s Western suburbs.
Learning in the ‘Life Garden’
At Gan Gani Kindy they believe that children learn best when they have the agency to make decisions in real life scenarios. Children thrive in the kindy’s “Life Garden” where they feed and water the chickens in exchange for fresh eggs, turn and fertilise the garden beds with compost and manure from neighbouring horses, discuss and plan what plants to grow, water and nurture the seedlings, observe the native bees pollinating, problem solve what to do about pesky possums, and sample the fresh produce.
But that is not all that makes Gan Gani Kindy special… They also believe it takes a community to raise a child, but not all of us have a community of elders around us in our modern fast paced world. To solve this, Gan Gani have adopted grandmas and grandpas through their partnership with the Salvation Army Aged Care who come and visit every month to play and sing and just be together. There is a special kind of relationship between the very young and the very old and the staff are proud to be facilitating intergenerational learning at Gan Gani Kindy.
Outside School Hours Care
While the kindy hours are shorter than day care, Gan Gani Kindy also caters to working families through their partnership with Brisbane Montessori’s Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) program. As Gan Gani Kindy and BMS are neighbours (separated only by a fence and a rolling green field), staff deliver children from before school care direct to kindy in the morning, and pick up again in the afternoon. Children are signed out of one service directly into the other, to ensure they are safe and supervised at all times, right up to 6.00pm on kindy days.
A warm and welcoming environment
Above all else, it is the feeling at Gan Gani that makes families fall in love and want to stay. From the moment they see the wide open spaces and contemplative nooks of the playground, or the well-equipped inside environment, or hear the deep and caring conversations staff share with the children on a daily basis, families know they want to be a part of this community. For this reason, Gan Gani encourage family participation through roster days (always a special treat for your child), the parent committee and the many social events held throughout the year.
Gan Gani Community Kindergarten is located at 691-695 Fig Tree Pocket Rd, Fig Tree Pocket.
