Five Theme Parks for Five Days of Christmas with Your Family
With December comes the realisation for many parents that not only is Christmas just around the corner, but so is the largest school holiday break of the year – six (sometimes more) weeks with the kids at home. Whilst this might make the kids completely giddy with excitement, the anticipation is mostly theirs alone. For parents, what this really means is over 40 days – or 500 waking hours – that we try to fill with fun activities, events and day trips to help ensure our favourite little people’s minds and bodies are kept active and entertained. And even though kids race into the first week of holidays full of energy and wonder, their minds overflowing with all the fun things they plan to do when not at school, in reality it only takes about 3 days before they are eagerly looking at us for something fun to do to ease their new-found boredom.
Luckily for us Brisbanites, we live right near the Gold Coast, which is without question the Theme Park Capital of Australia. Sure, you can plan as many home craft activities and outdoor games as possible, but there is nothing more exciting for kids (and fun for parents too) than a day at one of the five wonderlands that are only a short drive away. For while Christmas day is hard to be rivalled, for a child a whole day (and sometimes night) spent running from one fantastic ride to the next, watching live shows, going down amazing water slides and getting one thrill after another is just as good – or even better – than Christmas morning itself.
So, as you find yourself making a list of things to do with the kids during the holidays, why not give your child 5 extra days of Christmas at 5 different theme parks? Below is an outline of what they have to offer and the reasons why these adventure playgrounds of entertainment should not be missed during the festive break this year.
Movie World has something to offer kids (and adults) of all ages and is packed with a full days worth of thrills to be discovered. With a huge range of rides to choose from like the stomach churning Arkham Asylum coaster where you can pull 4.2Gs and face five heart-pounding inversions for the older ones to the fun cartoon world of the WB Kids zone where all the favourite Looney Tune characters come to play for the small kids. Movie World is definitely a great theme park for toddlers! From the 13th December you can make it a full day and night as you wrap yourself up in a magical White Christmas adventure with your whole family as Movie World is transformed into an enchanting winter wonderland. Give your children the white Christmas experience of the northern hemisphere as the main street becomes a snow land complete with magical fairy lights, Christmas music and more. Running from the 13th – 27th December nightly from 6pm it is definitely not to be missed!
There is definitely no shortage of fun to be had at Dreamworld and if anything it’s a struggle trying to decide on what to go on next as you will want to go on everything! Are you a Zombie or a Soldier? Zombie Evilution – The Battle for Kevil Hill has begun and YOU need to choose a side. The only laser combat battle to be staged in a town across two buildings with two storeys this new attraction will challenge even the most seasoned laser tag fans. For those chasing the stomach dropping sensation then you’ll love The Tower of Terror or The Giant Drop. Smaller kids are going to adore Wiggles World and the whole family can have fun at Shrek’s Faire Faire Away section full of fun family rides and shows. Indeed time will fly as you and the kids try out all the thrill and fun rides, activities and shows on offer and standby tiger lovers – Dreamworld’s youngest tiger siblings Baru & Ravi. Roar into action with their new Cub College Tiger Show December 26th!
Renowned for its great animal conservation efforts the whole family will love visiting the many beautiful creatures who call Sea World their home. Marvel at the penguins, sharks, dolphins and more and come and meet Australia’s only baby Polar Bear ‘Henry’. This gorgeous bundle of fluff has just come out to play at Polar Bear Shores ‘Polar Pre-School’ and he can’t wait to meet you. It’s not just an amazing wildlife experience though with rides and family entertainment a-plenty. There are stunt, character and animal shows to see and mind-blowing rides to enjoy. Experience a ride the whole family will love as you’re taken on a thrilling journey featuring amazing water and fire effects. Opening December 2013, Storm Coaster is the only ride of its kind in Australia and a must do this summer! Sea World also offer helicopter flights and cruises over and around the beautiful Gold Coast – a truly breathtaking experience!
As the summer sun comes out in force and escape from its rays becomes a necessity then grab the kids before they melt and head to Wet’n’Wild – the perfect fun park to cool down the whole family. This is so much more than just a simple water park though with slides and rides that are sure to get your heart racing. Challenge your friends and family to a fast-paced race down the Super 8 Aqua Racer, one of the most advanced racing slides in the world, featuring cool drag lights and timing technology to ensure you receive your placing to an accuracy of 1/1000th of a second. Or let the kids loose at the pirate-themed interactive aquatic adventure land of Buccaneer Bay. Everyone will love the ocean feel of The Giant Wave Pool or for those chasing a more serene dip then you can grab a soft tube and float lazily down the river in Calypso Bay. There are plenty of rest and shaded spots to have a break and grab some lunch but chances are there will be too much fun to be had to stop for too long!
Celebrate an Australian Christmas – summer style – and spend a lazy day AND night in the cooling pools and thrilling rides on this fun water park has to share. That’s right! WhiteWater World will soon be open after dark so you can well and truly make the most of the Gold Coast’s balmy Summer nights. Get your cozzies on kids! It’s time to go to WhiteWater World and try out the newly refurbished Pipeline Plunge. Watch that bucket of water! And for the smallest adventure-seekers Wiggle Bay – the official watery home of the Wiggles – is the perfect wet playground that is designed especially for toddlers. For those a little older and keen for a bit of competition you can race for glory alongside your family or friends on the eight lane Blue Ringed Octopus slide or attempt the Wedgie which is definitely not for the faint-hearted! Whether you are relaxing in a rented Cabana space or racing with speed down one of the many rides the kids are going to go mad with excitement from the minute they walk in to the second they are dragged out.
So make the most of the fact we live in the Theme Park Capital of Australia this Christmas and mark down these five attractions as places to visit with the kids over summer. Not only will they be kept busy and entertained it will feel like five extra days of Christmas for them and you will be creating a lifetime of memories to store away as well. It’s the ultimate gift you can share with your kids.
