The Parenting Place provides Lactation Consultant services and Parenting preparation classes to Brisbane’s new and expectant parents. Kate Maynard, Registered Nurse, Registered Midwife and International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC), Nicole Scurr, Registered Nurse, Maternal and Child Health Nurse, First Aid Educator and IBCLC, and Chantelle Forsyth, Registered Paediatric Emergency Nurse, each understand that every family is different and every baby is different.

With nine children between them, ranging from 4 through to 13 years old, Kate, Nicole and Chantelle know the challenges that can present at a range of ages. As trained health professionals, they have worked with hundreds of parents from all walks of life and they know how the right support can create a happy, healthy, thriving family. They can help you to achieve your breastfeeding and parenting goals – whatever they may be. The mission of The Parenting Place is to provide support and education to parents so that they can create a happy, healthy and thriving family.

What services are available at The Parenting Place?

At their beautifully unique and well-equipped studio in Highvale in Brisbane, The Parenting Place provides a number of services for expectant and new parents.

Lactation Consults

Private appointments by very experienced IBCLCs to listen to your concerns and complete a full history and assessment of your breastfeeding situation. Your consultant will observe a breastfeed and develop a plan with you for you to progress towards your goals.

Small Group Lactation Consults

Lactation Support is given in a very small group setting (maximum of 4 mums and babies). This still allows for quality lactation support (assessment, history and plan) but in a friendly, small group format. The group consults also allow for more affordable access to a Lactation Consultant. Many mums love this style of consult for the sharing of experiences and the sense of connectivity to other mums in similar situations. Private health insurance rebates are available, depending on the provider and level of cover.

Antenatal Breastfeeding Preparation Classes

The Parenting Place encourages both support parents and enthusiastic support people to attend these fun and informative classes. Find out what to expect of breastfeeding once your precious baby is here, in fact right from the very moment they are born. The aim is to arm you with knowledge and confidence. The facilitator will ease any of your concerns and bust some breastfeeding myths.

Topics covered include:

  • How breastmilk is made
  • How breastmilk supply maintained
  • What to expect with a new baby and feeding
  • What support is available after your baby arrives
  • Question and answers, myth-busting

Private Health rebates are available, depending on the provider and level of cover.

Becoming Parents and The Next Nine Months Classes

This class is aimed at both expectant parents and covers practical, common sense and evidence-based information about life with your baby in the first 6 weeks.

Topics covered include:

  • The importance of a family’s first six weeks
  • What does a baby really need
  • What will life look like as a new parent
  • How to look after yourselves

The Parenting Place takes special consideration in these classes to also discuss your transition to parenthood, the importance of self-care and perinatal mental health.

Expression Sessions

Need to get expressing? Curious about expressing? Bring your pump along and learn how to use it to its full potential. Increase your knowledge of the effect of expressing and learn some effective, professional tips and tricks to get the most out of your breast pump. The Expression Sessions are held in a small group format. Private Health rebates are available, depending on the provider and level of cover.

Mother’s Groups

The Parenting Place is passionate about providing a support network for parents. Their planned 8 week Mother’s Groups provide a friendly, relaxed and informative. The mother’s groups are lead each week by Registered Nurses/Midwife/Child Health Nurse/Lactation Consultants. Freshly baked morning tea and coffee are also supplied. Special guest speakers will visit to discuss topics pertinent for mums and their babies. Groups are capped at 8 mums and babies.

FREE Mother and Baby Clinic

A free Mother & Baby Clinic is held each Monday morning at The Parenting Place’s beautiful Highvale studio in Brisbane. Drop in to have your baby weighed and your baby’s red book updated, as well as to receive feeding and sleeping advice. NOTE: Appointments are currently necessary to conform to infection control protocols.
