Founder, owner and trainer/teacher of Whanau Dance N Fitclub on Brisbane’s north side, Shelly, welcomes you to their family business. Along with husband, Jaydyn, who is co-owner and helps with the maintenance and building of new equipment, they invite you to visit their club to experience the fitness difference that can be participated in by the whole family.

How Whanau Dance N Fitclub began

Shelly decided to leave her dream job at Snap Fitness North Lakes to open up their family-based home club so that she could spend more time with their severely autistic 8 yr old boy and increase the quality of their family life. Since then, Whanau Dance N Fitclub have ventured to providing mobile training to cater to for their members with disabilities, but also for anyone after this flexibility.

Evidence-based Therapeutic Programs for children and adults with disabilities

Whanau Dance N Fitclub

Whanau Dance N Fitclub’s newest program is Rhythm Works Integrative Hip Hop Dance for children and adults with mild to severe disabilities. This specialised program uses evidence-based therapeutic practices to achieve developmental goals. It is an inclusive class that focuses on skill development, self empowerment, and celebrating our differences.

Individual or Group Fitness Classes for the whole family

Classes are offered as individual and group classes. Rhythm Works Integrative Hip Hop Dance is specialised for people with individual learning difficulties and other special needs, including autism, Down’s Syndrome, cerebral palsy, SPD, ADD, ADHD, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, hearing impairment, low muscle tone, people in wheelchairs, and those with any other individual learning differences and physical challenges.

Based on the hip hop made easy program Whanau Dance N Fitclub’s Rhythm Works classes use rhythm and hip hop dance to achieving across 5 developmental domains. Student benefits include improvement in:

  • Gross motor skills
  • Fine motor skills
  • Cognitive skills
  • Body awareness
  • Body control
  • Social and emotional skills

The classes also help with strength, flexibility, focus, imitation, ideation, motor planning, memory and recall, coordination, receptive language and expressive language, self help and much more.

Ages for this program 3-100 years old – there are no limits!

Dancing for fitness

Did you know that dancing can also help strengthen the muscles needed for familiar movements like getting dressed, brushing your hair and teeth? What a fun way to flex and build our muscles!

Students are encouraged to bring a buddy, therapist, parent, or carer, however the goal at Whanau Dance N Fitclub is to achieve independent participation. The staff will work together with your therapists so dance classes are specifically designed to help support you or your child’s existing therapy goals.

Session prices

Whanau Dance N Fitclub have carefully chosen their pricing and are able to offer discounts to those who need a helping hand, depending on individual circumstances. They are also in the process of putting the club on the NDIS register, so funding will soon pay for your session classes and uniforms etc. It will also help the club get funding if specific equipment is needed.

Experienced professionals

Shelly has been a semi-professional dancer for 28 yrs, and has taught dance since 2003; from ballet, tap, jazz, acro, special needs, hip hop to performing. She’s also a qualified child carer / nanny and worked for 11 years in the industry until the miscarriage of their baby girl at 37 weeks made her change direction and become a qualified personal trainer and group fitness instructor. Shelly is a certified Zumba instructor and Rhythm Works Integrative Hip Hop Dance instructor, and absolutely loves what she does to help everyone she can. With a very bubbly personality and a lot of patience, members of Whanau Dance N Fitclub enjoy every moment in Shelly’s company. All members of the club know Shelly and Jaydyn’s family, who are flexible to be available and are happy to accommodate to everyone, no matter what your needs or fitness level.
