Japanese Cultural Day

August 18. 2019

10:00 am - 3:00 pm Free

Head along to the Japanese Cultural Day to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Japanese Garden being opened at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens Mt Coot-tha. This milestone is a part of Japan Week 2019 festivities, providing a chance for residents to enjoy the food and culture of Japan in a beautiful and serene garden setting suitable for all ages with something for everyone.

The event will feature traditional activities including Mochitsuki rice cake making, tea ceremonies, calligraphy workshops, Ikebana flower arranging and woodblock printing. There will also be live Japanese tradition music and Taiko drum performances throughout the day.

There will also be a series of workshops for children and the young at heart including origami, Kamishibai storytelling and craft, miso soup and sushi roll cooking classes, and you can even learn how to wear a kimono. You can also bring the outdoors inside by asking bonsai advice during our care demonstrations or you can learn how to create your own kokedama plant balls. Alongside these activities are martial arts displays, lovely gardens to traverse, and a wide range of yummy food trucks available for attendees to enjoy.

NOTE: Kimono demostrations and photos require your own kimono. Bookings are required for the kokedama workshops only. Numbers are limited. For more information, or to book, call 07 3403 2535.
