Constellation Cup 2018: AUS vs NZ Netball
PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS NOW FINISHED.
Netball fever will hit the Brisbane Entertainment Centre on October 7, when trans-Tasman rivals the Samsung Australian Diamonds and the New Zealand Silver Ferns battle it out in the opening match of the Constellation Cup.
Competition will be tight, with the Aussies putting on their best show as they vie for selection in next year’s Netball World Cup team while the Silver Ferns are on the rebuild and will be fighting to put their 2018 Commonwealth Games performance behind them. Looking at the statistics, the Diamonds, who currently hold the trophy after winning the Cup seven times out of eight and who will be playing to a home game advantage, should be set to pull off a win in Brisbane and have the perfect start to the competition. The Brisbane game on October 7 is set to have supporters on the edge of their seats!
Constellation Cup Brisbane Pre-Match Entertainment
What better way is there for Brisbane Kids to immerse themselves in the thrill of the Constellation Cup than by joining the excitement of supporting their sporting heroes live from the sidelines?! There will be plenty of fun activities for kids to enjoy pre-match at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre, including face painting, coloured hair spray, and games, along with the opportunity to grab a free Diamonds poster which can be signed by the players post-match.
There will also be action on the court before the main game with the curtain-raiser to the Constellation Cup – the grand final of the Marie Little Shield, an annual national netball championship for women with an intellectual disability.
What is the Constellation Cup?
Both the NZ Silver Ferns and the AUS Diamonds will be putting everything on the line in order to take home the title and the Constellation Cup itself, which is a pretty cool prize! The Constellation Cup is a trophy made from 3kg of solid sterling silver that represents both the New Zealand Silver Ferns and the Australian Diamonds and is set with 101 white, black and cognac diamonds.
A win on home soil for the first game would be a big bonus for the Diamonds, as the Constellation Cup is a best of four series. All games require an outright result, and if the test series result is even with an equal number of wins to each country the winner of the series will be determined by the greater goal percentage. If goal difference is not able to separate the teams, the highest number of goals scored will be taken into account to ascertain the winner of the Constellation Cup. So, let’s hope the Diamonds win – and win by a big goal difference – so they can take home the trophy for the eighth time in nine years!
