Brisbane Kids are so lucky to live in a great city where each year they can experience a truly magical family Christmas adventure. And this year there is so much happening that we are sure Santa will be flying into Brisbane from the North Pole early just to join in the festive fun. The 2018 Christmas in Brisbane program is a  4 week spectacular, features everything from concerts, parades and fireworks, to markets, movies, carols, enchanted gardens and a light show that has to be seen to be believed! The best bit is that all these amazing Christmas events are FREE and accessible to all Brisbane families, as they take place in the city, Roma Street Parkland or across the river in South Bank.

Listed below are all the highlights of the  Christmas in Brisbane program . We are pretty sure you will have a hard time choosing which of these events to attend and will end up seeing many, if not all of them, by the time Christmas Eve arrives!

Lighting of the Christmas Tree King George Square Brisbane Marketing

The Lighting of the Brisbane City Christmas Tree presented by St. George Bank

Date: Friday 30th November

Time: 6.30pm

Location: King George Square, The City

Cost: FREE

The 4 week Christmas in Brisbane extravaganza kicks off with the official lighting of the beautiful Brisbane City Christmas tree, which stands 22m tall in the centre of the city for all to see. On top of witnessing the switching on of Queensland’s biggest solar powered Christmas tree, the night’s festivities will also include special guests singing everyone’s favourite Christmas carols and a very special Christmas performance. Of course, it is expected that the man in red will also make an appearance on the night. If you can’t make it to the official lighting of the tree, don’t despair, as the tree remains in King George Square and will be sparkling nightly until Christmas Eve.

Gold Lotto City Hall Lioght Spectacular Brisbane City

The Gold Lotto City Hall Lights

Date: Friday 7th  December – Monday 24th December

Time: 7.30pm – midnight (show every 15 minutes)

Location: King George Square, The City

Cost: FREE

Make sure you do not miss the Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular. This is an amazing and beautiful show that will entertain all ages, and is guaranteed to put everyone in the festive spirit. Believe us when we say this show is truly magical and once you have seen it, you will want to go back again and again. This year Brisbane Families can watch a playful Aussie Christmas tale come to life via animation onto City Hall.

Christmas in Brisbane Enchanted Garden, rainbow light trees, boy looking at illuminated trees

Enchanted Garden

Date: Friday 7th  December – Wednesday 19th December

Time: 6.30pm – 10pm

Location: Roma Street Parkland

Cost: FREE

Back bigger than ever in 2018 due to it’s popularity, the Enchanted Garden is a not to be missed Christmas activity for all Brisbane families. The whole family can wander through the gardens on a warm summer night and enjoy the twinkling lights, charming Christmas decorations and mellow music. New additions this year include food trucks, live music and glittering faeries to find amongst the shimmering trees and gardens. Another bonus this year is that there are longer opening hours and no queuing to get into the gardens. Please note last entry will be at 9.45pm.

Christmas Carols Brisbane Marketing

The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols

Date: Saturday 8th December

Time: 4pm – 9.15pm

Location: Riverstage, City Botanic Gardens

Cost: FREE

Every Australian capital city holds a major, not-to-be-missed televised Christmas carol showcase, and The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols is Brisbane’s signature event. Televised on Channel 9 in 2017, the carols will have Brisbane families singing along to all their favourite Christmas songs as some of Australia’s most talented singers perform live on stage. Acts this year include a range of popular Australian artists leading the carols for all to enjoy. The stage will be full of dancers, colour and fun, and everyone is sure to have themselves a merry little Christmas after witnessing this joyous event.

Christmas parade Brisbane City Myer

Christmas Parade presented by David Jones

Date: Friday 14th December – Sunday 23rd December

Time: 7.00pm

Location: Queen Street Mall and King George Square, The City

Cost: FREE

There is no better way to celebrate the festive season than the Christmas Parade, so make sure you bring your Brisbane Kids along to see this amazing annual event. From 7pm nightly, exciting new characters, elves, dancers, magical floats  and a parade of hundreds spreading Christmas cheer will lead Santa from the Edward Street end of the mall through to King George Square.

Christmas Gift Markets Christmas in Brisbane, Santa and Mrs Claus wandering through the markets

Christmas Gift Markets in South Bank

Date: Friday 14th  December – Sunday 23rd December

Time: 3pm – 10pm daily

Location: South Bank Parklands- Stanley Street Plaza, The Arbour and Little Stanley Street

Cost: FREE

For the ultimate Christmas shopping experience, bring the whole family along to South Bank to find the perfect Christmas presents for everyone. Enjoy amazing food while enjoying the festive ambiance of the Christmas Markets. There will be gift markets spread across three locations this year – Stanley Street Plaza, The Arbour and Little Stanley Street; and Holly Jolly Kids, offering free kids craft and dance activities from 3pm – 7pm daily, will be at Little Stanley Street Lawn. And because Christmas just isn’t Christmas without seeing the man in red, Santa will be onsite daily in South Bank to see all the Brisbane Kids from 4.30pm – 8.30pm daily.

Holly Jolly Kids Christmas, Christmas Craft

Date: Friday 14th December – Sunday 23rd December

Time: 3pm – 7pm daily

Location: Little Stanley Street Lawns, South Bank Parklands

Cost: FREE

Just for Brisbane Kids, there are is a special Elf Academy in South Bank this year and everyone is invited to attend! The awesome crew from Aerial Angels have some daring activities that once completed will turn any Brisbane Kid into a qualified elf. There will be hula hooping, juggling, tight-rope walking and aerial trapeze- all essential skills that must be mastered for any elf wanting to work alongside Santa. For those who maybe wanting a a little less active job, Holly Jolly Kids craft and dance classes will allow Brisbane Kids to make Christmas ornaments and learn the choreography from The Queensland Ballet’s, The Nutcracker. While all these festive hands on kids activities are occurring, there will be roaming acrobatic performances throughout the day and evening to keep the crowds entertained.

Christmas Cinema Christmas in Brisbane, outdoor Christmas cinema

The Christmas Cinema gives Brisbane families the chance to watch their favourite festive movie on the big screen whilst relaxing on the River Quays inviting lawn. The perfect location for balmy nights in the lead up to Christmas, this year’s cinema program includes timeless classics such as Miracle on 34th Street and Home Alone, as well as more modern Christmas stories such as The Nightmare Before Christmas and Arthur Christmas. Remember to BYO picnic blanket and picnic basket of movie snacks!

Carols by Twilight, families at South Bank Carols

Date: Friday 15th December – Sunday 23rd December

Time: 6pm – 8pm

Location: River Quay Green, South Bank Parklands

Cost: FREE

Pack a picnic rug and enjoy everyone’s favourite Christmas carols in the warm summer air as the sun goes down. Cigany Weaver, SCAT and the Queensland Show Choir will sing all the classic Christmas songs, the whole family will be able to sing a long to. BYO picnic blanket and dinner or purchase it from one of the restaurants in South Bank and settle in for the night as a Christmas movie will follow the carols. Note to parents – the area is licensed should you wish to bring a bottle of wine to enjoy with your meal.

The fireworks spectacular south Bank Christmas

Christmas Fireworks

Date: Thursday 20th December – Sunday 23rd December

Time:  8pm – 8.15pm

Location: Clem Jones Promenade, South Bank Parklands

Cost: FREE

To add a big bang to your family’s Christmas celebrations, bring everyone along to South Bank for some festive fireworks over the Brisbane River in the lead up to Christmas. Clem Jones Promenade will be the best vantage point to watch the nightly fireworks light up the city sky and instill a little Christmas spirit in us all.
