Brisbane Kids are so lucky to live in a great city where each year they can experience a truly magical family Christmas adventure. And this year there is so much happening that we are sure Santa will be flying into Brisbane from the North Pole early just to join in the festive fun. The 2019 Christmas in Brisbane program is a  4 week spectacular, features everything from carols, parades and fireworks, to markets, enchanted gardens and a light show that has to be seen to be believed! The best bit is that most of these amazing Christmas events are FREE and accessible to all Brisbane families, as they take place in the city, Roma Street Parkland or across the river in South Bank.

Listed below are all the highlights of the  Christmas in Brisbane program . We are pretty sure you will have a hard time choosing which of these events to attend and will end up seeing many, if not all of them, by the time Christmas Eve arrives!

Lighting of the Christmas Tree King George Square Brisbane Marketing

The Lighting of the Brisbane City Christmas Tree

Date: Friday 29th November

Time: 6.30pm

Location: King George Square, The City

Cost: FREE

The 4 week Christmas in Brisbane extravaganza kicks off with the official lighting of the beautiful Brisbane City Christmas tree, which stands 22m tall in the centre of the city for all to see. On top of witnessing the switching on of Queensland’s biggest Christmas tree. If you can’t make it to the official lighting of the tree, don’t despair, as the tree remains in King George Square and will be sparkling nightly until Christmas Eve.

The Enchanted Garden 1, magical fig tree lights

Enchanted Garden

Date: Friday 29th November – Friday 13th December

Time: 6pm – 9.30pm

Location: Roma Street Parkland

Cost: FREE

Back again in 2019 due to it’s popularity, the Enchanted Garden is a not to be missed Christmas activity for all Brisbane families. The whole family can wander through the gardens on a warm summer night and enjoy the series of shimmering gardens, a guard of delicately-lit weeping figs, to the treetops of a twinkling rainforest. Food trucks will be onsite as well as the newly opened The Garden Room Café, serving specialty bites into the evening. Another bonus this year is that extra entry and exit points have been added so visitors are encouraged to enter and exit the pathways at their own pace, creating their own enchanted experience. Please note last entry will be at 9.15pm.

Gold Lotto City Hall Lioght Spectacular Brisbane City

The Gold Lotto City Hall Lights

Time: 7.30pm – midnight (show every 15 minutes)

Location: King George Square, The City

Make sure you do not miss the Gold Lotto City Hall Light Spectacular. This is an amazing and beautiful show that will entertain all ages, and is guaranteed to put everyone in the festive spirit. Believe us when we say this show is truly magical and once you have seen it, you will want to go back again and again. This year Brisbane Families can watch a brand new playful Aussie Christmas tale come to life via animation onto City Hall.

Christmas Carols Brisbane Marketing

The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols

Date: Saturday 7th December

Time: 4pm – 9.15pm

Location: Riverstage, City Botanic Gardens

Cost: FREE

Every Australian capital city holds a major, not-to-be-missed televised Christmas carol showcase, and The Lord Mayor’s Christmas Carols is Brisbane’s signature event. The carols will have Brisbane families singing along to all their favourite Christmas songs as some of Australia’s most talented singers perform live on stage. Acts this year include a range of popular Australian artists leading the carols for all to enjoy. The stage will be full of dancers, colour and fun, and everyone is sure to have themselves a merry little Christmas after witnessing this joyous event.

St stephens cathedral

The Lights of Christmas at St Stephen’s Cathedral

Date: Wednesday 11th December – Tuesday 24th  December

Time: 7.30pm – midnight

Location:  St Stephen’s Cathedral

Cost: FREE

Gather on the lawn at St Stephen’s to celebrate the season of peace, joy and goodwill with an extraordinary light and sound show presented by Charter Hall. All the family will enjoy the beautifully animated tale, which will illuminate the Cathedral’s historic walls every evening from  11 December until Christmas Eve. The 12-minute show, by the creators of Sydney’s Vivid Lightwalk, will run continuously from 7pm through until midnight. This year the free event will include music, food and children’s activities from 6.30pm.

Brisbane City Christmas Parade

Brisbane City Christmas Parade

Date: Friday 13th December – Sunday 22nd December

Time: 7.00pm

Location: Queen Street Mall and King George Square, The City

Cost: FREE

There is no better way to celebrate the festive season than the Christmas Parade, so make sure you bring your Brisbane Kids along to see this amazing annual event. From 7pm nightly, exciting new characters, elves, dancers, magical floats  and a parade of hundreds spreading Christmas cheer will lead Santa from the Edward Street end of the mall through to King George Square.

The Collective Markets- Christmas Edition

Date: Friday 14th  December – Sunday 23rd December

Time: 3pm – 10pm daily

Location: South Bank Parklands- Stanley Street Plaza, The Arbour and Little Stanley Street

For the ultimate Christmas shopping experience, bring the whole family along to South Bank to find the perfect Christmas presents for everyone. Enjoy amazing food while enjoying the festive ambiance of the Christmas Markets. There will be gift markets spread across two locations this year – Stanley Street Plaza and Little Stanley Street.

Santa's Stop Over, Santa and Mrs Claus

Santa’s Stop Over with Story Telling and Craft

Date: Friday 20th December – Monday 23rd December

Time: 4pm – 9pm (Santa’s Stop Over is from 5pm – 9pm and crafts and storytelling is from 4pm – 7.30pm)

Location: Flowstate and Flowstate Lawns

Cost: FREE

This Christmas, Brisbane Kids can visit Santa at Santa’s Stop Over at Flowstate from 5.00pm until 9.00pm and watch Santa Claus as he spreads his Christmas cheer over South Bank Parklands from his brightly lit abode. Little Brisbane Kids can have a photograph with Santa, set amongst a magnificent towering fig tree and light installation. 

After visiting Santa, from 4.00pm until 7.30pm, storytelling and crafts will entertain Brisbane Kids at the Flowstate Lawns. Here, Brisbane Kids cane get creative and make their very own Koala crown, complete with a Santa hat- celebratory of Australia’s summer festive spirit.

Carols Extravaganza South Bank

Cost: $5pp free for kids under 2 years sitting on laps

New to the Christmas line up in 2019, the Carols Extravaganza, held at the South Bank Piazza, is an exciting Christmas production featuring film, song, dance and a visit from Santa himself! Perfect for every member of the family, there will be everything from acrobatic aerialists to serene ballet compositions and show stopping vocals, this show is guaranteed to ignite excitement and nostalgia for the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”.

This year the Carols Extravaganza will feature 8 jubilant shows across 4 nights. Performances will take place from 20 to 23 December, running twice nightly at 6.45pm until 7.30pm and 8.30pm until 9.15pm, so you can conclude your South Bank experience swaying and singing to a chorus of festive Christmas carols.

Tickets for the Carols Extravaganza will be sold at $5, with free entry for children 2 years and under if seated on a caregiver’s lap. Tickets are limited and will go on sale from Monday 2 December via christmasinbrisbane.com.au or 136 246.

The fireworks spectacular south Bank Christmas

Location: Clem Jones Promenade, South Bank Parklands

To add a big bang to your family’s Christmas celebrations, bring everyone along to South Bank for some festive fireworks over the Brisbane River in the lead up to Christmas. Clem Jones Promenade will be the best vantage point to watch the nightly fireworks light up the city sky and instill a little Christmas spirit in us all. Other viewing locations include Streets Beach and River Quay and for a really special view, you might consider watching the show from The Wheel of Brisbane.
