Australia is a diverse and culturally rich nation, which means there’s a lot to be grateful for on Australia Day, and plenty of ways of celebrate! Here’s a few of the best Australia Day events for families that are happening around South-East Queensland and beyond.
Australia Day at Victoria Park – Brisbane
So much more than just a golf course, Victoria Park will be celebrating Australia Day with fun activities including tug-a-war, sack races, a jumping castle, giant outdoor games, a kids’ playground and great food and drink offers. Victoria Park’s fun 18 hole putt putt course and driving range will also be open all day. Kids will also receive free Aussie stickers and soft serve ice-cream thanks to Maleny Dairies. The Victoria Park Bistro will be serving an Australian menu, including wood-fired pizzas. Victoria Park Bar and Bistro is located at 308 Herston Rd, Herston.
Australia Day at Broadwater Parklands – Gold Coast
This year for Australia Day, you can jump on the G:link (Gold Coast Light Rail) and head down to the Broadwater in the cool of the afternoon. Pack your picnic rug for an evening of spectacular fireworks – the only ones on the Gold Coast! You will also want to bring your appetite so you can indulge in the huge food truck feast or grab a snag from the barbeque. There will be the JJ Richards “Aussie Sports Zone” for the kids and some music from local artists along the pier. Broadwater Parklands is located at Marine Parade, Southport.
Australia Day at Highfields Pioneer Village – Toowoomba
The Australia Day program at Highfields Pioneer Village begins with Aboriginal art talks at 9.00am, cow milking at 9:30am, and much more. There are over 60 buildings of historic interest to wander through filled with collectibles and memorabilia of a time when life was much simpler in Australia. Youngsters will love the baby animal nursery, whip cracking school, shearing sheep demonstrations and family games. There will also be an Indigenous art show and an Aboriginal dance workshop by Don Nikkelson. Local vendors will sell their goods and chattels at the Village Markets and Trevor Dodds, Cactoblastis and John Colville will entertain the crowds. Billy tea and damper is available onsite and there will be plenty of Aussie tucker including vegemite sandwiches, meat pies and steak sandwiches. Highfields Pioneer Village is located at 73 Wirraglen Road, Highfields.
Australia Day at Suttons Beach – Redcliffe
The gorgeous Suttons Beach in Redcliffe is the backdrop for this afternoon and evening event which offers traditional Australia Day activities such as thong throwing competitions, beach cricket and, of course, the good old fashioned Aussie BBQ. There will also be live stage entertainment to dance along to and an array of market and food stalls to explore. After all the excitement, the celebrations will conclude with a bang. The main event begins at 2.00pm, and the fireworks will begin at 7:30pm. Suttons Beach is located along Marine Parade, Redcliffe.
Australia Day at Bribie Island
If you are keen to make the most of your Australia Day then head to Brennan and Apex Parks where celebrations are due to kick off early with a free Aussie breakfast from 7.30am. In addition to the usual Aussie Day games and activities, from 2pm there will also be live stage entertainment, market and food stalls and a traditional BBQ. Australia Day at Riverlife – Brisbane
Riverlife is hosting an adventure experience the whole family can enjoy together on Australia Day. The day long Australia Adventure Day event includes four 30 minute sessions of paddle boarding or kayaking, abseiling, outdoor laser tag and rollerblading or biking all at iconic venues on the Brisbane River. Australia Day at Aussie World
You can’t get much more Aussie than Aussie World, which is offering free access to the grounds for the annual Australia Day celebrations. The highlight will be the dunny races which take place every year, plus there will be live entertainment and Aussie food to purchase on the day. Aussie World is located on Frizzo Road, Palmview.
Australia Day at Sandstone Point Hotel
Bring your Brisbane Kids along to Sandstone Point Hotel where the whole family can celebrate Australia Day with water slides, a free animal farm, triple J’s hottest 100, plus lots more. Sandstone Point Hotel is located along Bribie Island Road, Sandstone Point.
Australia Day at South Bank
South Bank is hosting the Great Australian Bites event – a celebration of food, culture and music on Australia Day. South Bank Restaurants will be preparing delectable tasting plates to try – including old favourites and new culinary delights, and local artists will be performing along the river. South Bank will also be the location for a spectacular Australia Day fireworks display.The firework begin at 7.30pm, and the best vantage point is along the Clem Jones Promenade. Australia Day at Samford Historical Museum
The Samford Museum at Samford Village offers a unique way to celebrate Australia Day. You can introduce kids to the pioneering history of Australia through their displays of vintage vehicles and other historical items. There will also be a bush band, sausage sizzle, bush poetry and a native bee display. Samford Historical Museum is located on Station Street in Samford.
