Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital
Brisbane families take note: Australia’s largest paediatric hospital is set to open in South Brisbane one month before Christmas.
The Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital brings together all of the services and staff of the Royal Children’s and Mater Children’s hospitals. Based in a new building next to the Mater, the merged facility will open its doors on the 29th of November 2014.
Chairwoman of the Children’s Health Queensland Board – Susan Johnston – says it will be the public hospital for most children in Brisbane and the state’s tertiary referral hospital for serious childhood injury and illness.
Appointment letters for the new hospital will start arriving about one month before opening day.
The new Brisbane children’s hospital facilities
The new hospital will have 359 beds, which the government says is 25 per cent more capacity than the Royal and Mater children’s hospitals combined.
There’ll be 48 emergency treatment bays and 14 operating theatres. Children will stay in single rooms with ensuites that also enable parents to sleep over.
The hospital will offer new services including: clinics to treat obesity, pain and allergies; a service for adolescents and paediatric renal treatment.
A centre for Children’s Health Research is being built next to the campus. The centre will have research laboratories, pathology services and space for universities.
Rooftop terraces and gardens, playgrounds, Radio Lollipop studio and Starlight Express Room will help brighten the mood. Pets can even be brought to an outdoor area for visits!
In addition to the care provided on site, the hospital will support regional communities through telemedicine and outreach services.
