| JUST FOR BUBS |
Having a baby is one of the most exciting things a couple can do, but it can also be a time of great change and upheaval. Most experts will tell you not to make other life changes at this time, such as moving house, if it can be avoided but for some reason many people do, especially with their first child!
Having the right sort of help at this time is essential, and whilst is is not always practical or possible to have someone on hand 24/7, knowing where you can get help if you need it is the first step. It might be helpful to check out our For Parents page as well.

One of the first things expectant parents look at purchasing for their new baby is a car seat or capsule. There are many brands of car seats on the market but many new parents choose to hire a capsule initially. One of the best things about this, (other than the obvious safety aspect) is that you can carry baby in and out of the car with less chance of waking him or her up. I must admit, I chose to use a car seat which was suitable from birth to 4 years for both my children, but every time I woke my babies up getting them out of the car, I regretted not having a capsule! Every parent I know who has hired one swears they are fantastic, and they are certainly a safe way to transport your child. The capsule should be professionally fitted to your vehicle and lifts out when you want to take baby with you. You can hire a capsule from:
The Queensland Ambulance Service has a baby capsule hire service for short or long term hire. A fee is payable for the cost of hire, installation and GST. For more information about this service please phone the QAS Community Contact Centre on 1300 369 003 or email desccc@smartservice.qld.gov.au . Their operating hours are: 8:00am - 6.00pm Monday to Friday. Capsules can also be hired from Hire for Baby who have branches in Brisbane North (telephone: 3855 9003) and Brisbane South & Logan (telephone: 3297 1384) or visit www.hireforbaby.com to view their complete range of baby hire products.
Whether you use a rear-facing car seat or a capsule, please make sure you have it installed BEFORE baby is born (notwithstanding early arrivals!) as you will it to bring baby home from the hospital. Queensland Transport advises that this is important to check that the restraint fits your car and that other passengers can stilll sit comfortably in the vehicle once the restraint is installed. It would be very unfortunate to try to put a restraint in your vehicle the morning baby is due home from hospital only to find that it won't fit in your vehicle.
Until babies are one year old (less than 9kg), they must be in an approved rear-facing infant restraint - this is the safest way for a baby to travel. These restraints have two anchor points, the bolt and the vehicle seatbelt. There are many infant restraints on the markets today which convert to a child restraint later on. Choice On-Line is a great place to get more information about the models they tested, or for more information about child restraints, please see our For Parents page. Queensland Transport's website has a wealth of information about infant and child restraints, including details of legislation and the size and weight you child should be in different types of restraints.
One last word about buying any type of child or infant restraint. I have bought many baby products second-hand, but buying a second-hand restraint may not be the safest option for your baby. If you choose to buy a second-hand restraint, do not purchase one that has ever been in an accident, or that shows signs of wear in the straps, shell and harness. Preferably purchase one from someone you know well - a friend or relative - to ensure you know the restraint's history.

Acoustic Dreams - Lullabies for Babies
Performed by Tiffani Wood

“A beautiful new acoustic album of lullabies and nursery rhymes" Sunday Telegraph
Brisbane Kids is giving away a copy of Acoustic Dreams - Lullabies for Babies each month from August to December 2008, drawn at the end of each month. For your chance to win, email info@brisbanekids.com.au and tell us either your best tip for getting your baby to sleep or how NOT to get

Bed time can be one of the most challenging times of the day for a new parent. Those pre-birth fantasies of rocking your baby to sleep often collides with the reality of and over-tired, irritable baby and an even more exhausted parent, but it takes just one look at a sleeping baby to make parents understand why they embarked on the great adventure of parenthood. No matter how tough the day might have been, gazing on that angelic little face is the best feeling in the world. But getting babies to sleep is also the biggest problem many parents face.
Watch a small baby as they listen to music and you’ll see a myriad of emotions flicker across their faces. That’s because children have an instinctive drive to respond to musical sounds. Extensive research has shown that music plays a crucial part in the child’s development — both in the womb, before birth, and in the first 18 months after the baby is born. Music is also a wonderful way to calm and entertain young babies, who love the variety of sounds and soothing rhythms.
Acoustic Dreams - Lullabies for Babies is an acoustic collection of new lullabies with some of the classic lullabies and gentlest nursery rhymes featuring the beautiful and ethereal voice of Tiffani Wood. Tiffani’s vocals evoke a calm, restful, soothing atmosphere and a magical feeling of being carried away to another world. Fans from the Acoustic Dreams Lullaby Myspace also agree;
“I have a 5 month old and when I’m on the computer and I play acoustic dreams, with in 10 minutes she is out like a light!”
Most people would know Tiffani Wood from Australia’s all time biggest selling female group BARDOT which was formed back in 2000 through the reality TV series “Popstars” when Tiffani was just 22 years old. After touring around the world, number one hits, multi platinum singles and album and great success the band disbanded in 2002. After which Tiffani curved out a career starting up her own Independent record label Mud Honey records and releasing an album called “Bite your tongue”. Just as the album was about to be released Tiffani had a wonderful surprise…she was pregnant.
During her pregnancy Tiffani was featured on the front cover of Pregnancy and Birth magazine and articles both in Cosmo Pregnancy, Woman’s Day and OK! Magazine. Tiffani gave birth in April 2007 to a little girl.
“As a new mum and from talking to other new mums I noticed one of the most challenging problems was getting our babies to sleep. We try everything some work and some don’t. For me singing lullabies and or playing those to my bub worked occasionally. But I found when the guitar sound was introduced it worked and I thought if it worked for me and my bub then why not make an album to hopefully help other mums sooth their bubs too and in the end if bub doesn’t fall asleep it will definitely put mum to sleep as it did to me on a few occasions” says Wood
Acoustic Dreams - Lullabies for Babies gives both parent and baby a chance to relax, breathe and enjoy some musical magic — as well as a chance to focus on what’s really important: that incredibly precious little life they’ve created. |

Bottle or breast? Most experts will tell you that breast is best and having breastfed both my children, I will certainly not argue with that. However, breastfeeding doesn't come naturally to everyone. Some women seem born to breastfeed others have initial difficulties and persevere, some choose to bottle feed and some do a little of both. The main thing is that your baby is getting the nutrition he or she needs and you are happy with your choice.

Nappy Cake: This is an amazingly creative way to give people what they need most for a newborn - nappies! Thank you to Angi for sending in the photo and 'recipe'.
Ingredients:
- one or two packets of nappies (depending on how big you want to make the cake)
- a large piece of strong card board or board for the base
- string or ribbon
- decorations - bottles, teething rings, soft toys or bibs work well
- cellophane for wrapping
- gift wrap paper for the base
Recipe: Firstly, cover the cardboard base with gift paper. Next, take each nappy and roll it from the top. Secure each with ribbon. Arrange the nappies and decorations on the base starting from the inside to the outside, tying each circle with ribbon to ensure the nappies remain firmly in their place. Repeat this with the second and third tiers of the cake in the same way, but remember to make each tier a bit smaller to give a 'wedding cake' effect. To keep the three tiers of the cake together you can put a long stick through the middle and/or tie them up with long pieces of ribbon. |

What is Playgroup? A Playgroup is a group of mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers who meet together each week with their babies, toddlers and preschoolers for interaction and fun. Parents and caregivers work together to provide their babies and young children with opportunities to learn through play.
Why go to a Playgroup? Children under five are going through a stage of rapid brain and skill development. For optimum development your young child needs a stimulating environment to play and learn. Playgroups offer babies, toddlers and young children a wide variety of early leaning experiences. It’s a great way for your child to learn about the world, make friends and develop social skills.
Playgroup also gives mums, dads, grandparents and caregivers a chance to meet and share ideas and experiences. Many long-term friendships begin at Playgroup.
Playgroups are usually held once a week for a two hour session, and can be found in a variety of venues such as community and neighbourhood centres, council halls, preschools, church hall and people’s homes. You may be a mum, dad, caregiver, grandparent or family member – everyone is welcome. Playgroups are as different as the people in them. There is a Playgroup that is just right for you!
To start or join an existing Playgroup in your local area, contact the Queensland Playgroup Centre on 1800 171 882 (toll free), or visit Playgroup Queensland's website www.playgroupaustralia.com.au. |

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome means the sudden, unexpected death of a baby from no known cause. It is still not clear what causes SIDS but some factors have been identified which will reduce the risk. These include:
Putting Baby on the Back to Sleep from Birth
Sleeping on the back is the most important thing you can do to reduce the risk of SIDS. Supervised tummy play is important but babies must be put on their backs to go to sleep.
Sleep Baby with Face Uncovered
Position baby’s feet at the bottom of the cot so that baby cannot slip down under the blankets. Tuck the blanket in securely or try a baby sleeping bag with fitted arms and neck. Make sure there is no loose bedding, no cot bumpers, pillows or soft toys in the cot.
Avoid Exposure to Cigarette Smoke
Cigarette smoke has been shown to be harmful to babies both before and after birth and it increases the risk of SIDS. The risk of SIDS doubles if the mother smokes and doubles again if both parents smoke, even if parents smoke outside, away from the baby.
OTHER RECOMMENDATIONS TO SLEEP BABY SAFELY
Make sure the cot meets the Australian Standards and has a clean, firm and well fitting mattress. Do not add extra mattresses or padding to cots or portacots. An adult bed may be an unsafe sleeping place for babies if they:
* can get caught under adult bedding or pillows
* get caught between the wall and the bed
* fall out of bed
* are rolled on by someone who is sleeping deeply or affected by drugs/alcohol.
