Finishing off the summer school holidays with a bang, Australia Day provides the perfect opportunity for some family fun before it all gets serious again. In 2014 Australia Day falls on a Sunday and the public holiday is the Monday, which means three solid days of celebrating.
The atmosphere surrounding Australia Day is always one of togetherness and positivity, so what better way to rejoice in our fine country’s history than at a community event? We’ve gathered all of the best kid-friendly Australia Day events in Brisbane and beyond for those looking at partying somewhere other than at home this year. These event are always very popular, so be sure to arrive early to secure a good spot.

Hawthorne | Australia Day Big Aussie BBQ | 11am – 5pm – Bring the whole family down to the Main Oval and Club house at Morningside Football Club for a great Aussie Day out. There will be plenty to do and see, including a great band and DJ, pig racing, face painting, train rides, pony rides, jumping castle, tug of war, laughing clowns, farm animals, great food and drink and so much more.

Bribie Island | Aussie Beach Party | 7:30am – 7:30pm – Head on down to Brennan Park on Bribie Island this Australia Day for an Aussie Beach Party! Aussie Beach Party commences with a free breakfast from 7:30am. Aussie Beach Party will have something for everyone in the family to enjoy. Brennan Park Stage will feature a variety of workshops and demonstrations that have a unique Australiana theme, including a Bush Tucker talk and an Aussie Whipcracking demonstration. Live music will liven up the beach throughout the day, along with Beach Games and Beach Sports! Bring your own picnic rug and umbrella and stay for the day! There will be $2 rides all day and a spectacular fireworks display to top it all off.
Caboolture | Australia Day 2014 Celebrations | 9am – 3pm – Held at 12 acre Caboolture Historical Village this Australia Day celebration will include dairying, Gem Club, Family History Group, Pottery Club, saw mill, pump shed, print shop and blacksmithing displays, as well as train rides. Entertainment will be provided with axemen demonstrations, a flag raising ceremony at 9:30am, Percheron horses, Uke Dukes on the hotel verandah, a grand parade at 1pm and the Dave Reynolds concert at 1:45pm. A free shuttle bus will run from Morayfield Shopping Centre and Caboolture Train Station on the day.
Cleveland | Twenty-Sixers Birthday Australia Day Celebrations | 11am – 3pm – Are you born on the 26th January? Well this day is an extra special day for you! Why not pop down to the The Grandview Hotel and celebrate your birthday with other awesome people that were born on the 26th as well? The day will include great Australian music, children’s races and prizes, yummy lunch, a cake cutting ceremony and presentations.
Logan | Australia Day Pool Party | 10am – 2pm – Come along and help celebrate Australia Day by joining in one of the awesome pool parties that the Logan City Council will be hosting. There will be FREE jumping castles, a sausage sizzle, treasure hunt, face painting. pool games and great giveaways. Pool Parties will be happening at Beenleigh Aquatic Centre, Bethania Aquatic Centre, Eagleby Aquatic Centre and Logan North Aquatic Centre.
Newstead | Australia Day @ Gasworks | 10am – 10pm – Come and join us for a family friendly Australia Day. There will be great live entertainment, awesome rides, jumping castle and bungee run for the kids. The bigger kids can kick back and listen to Triple J’s Hottest 100 Countdown, have a go at the thong throwing contest, prawn peeling contest or mango eating contest. There will also great prizes and giveaways for those who come in the best Aussie Costume.
Redcliffe | Fish, Fun and Aussie Sun | 8am – 7pm – Fish, Fun & Aussie Sun is a key Australia Day event in the Moreton Bay region that features free activities, rides, delicious food, delightful market stalls, lots of interactive entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display to end the night. Special guests Bruce and Denise Morecombe will be in attendance.
Samford | Australia Day @ Samford Museum | 8:30am – 4pm – Take a trip back in time with demonstrations on timber cutting, blacksmithing, laundry and transport. There will also be great stalls, sausage sizzle lunch, a bush poet and a bush band to keep you entertained throughout the day.
South Bank | Australia Day Festival | from 10:30am – Head down to South Bank this Australia Day to celebrate everything that’s great about Australia. The Parklands will be full of fun for the whole family with music, interactive art installations, children’s entertainment and a spectacular fireworks display. Bring along your picnic blanket and BBQ, pick a shady spot and take in the views of our beautiful city. January 26th could not get much better!
South Bank | Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony | 11:15am – Express your pride for our country by starting off your Australia Day celebrations with the Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony. Network Ten’s Josh Holt will be the host for the 2014 ceremony and is also traditionally attended by the Governor of Queensland, Premier of Queensland and Lord Mayor of Brisbane and invited guests. You will get to witness a fantastic display from the Australian Defence Force with their guard of honour, Australian Army Band and the raising of the Australian, Queensland, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags. The fantastic service will end with a spectacular RAAF flypast over and a traditional 21 gun salute at 12 noon.
South Bank | Australia Day Barbie on the Green @ QPAC | 12pm – 7pm – Come along, kick back and enjoy some great ‘straya day fun. There will be awesome live entertainment from some of our very own local talent and, when you start to feel peckish, why not grab a snag in bread off the barbie. If you are not fan of the old snag, then our QPAC Chef will be whipping up some other great food to get stuck into.
Springfield | Australia Day – We Are One @ Robelle Domain | 3pm – 8:30pm – An Australia Day celebration like no other. This event will be a multicultural festival celebrating and honouring many dimensions of the Australian community; Indigenous Australians, every day Aussies and new Australians. There will also be 100 market stalls, family Aussie Day games, onstage entertainment, fun rides, food and fireworks.
Woodridge | Australia Day Miniature Trains | 10am – 4pm – Come and have a great day out and enjoy riding the 7 1/4 & 5 inch gauge miniature railway plus a 5/8 scale Wallis & Stevens Steam Show – Man’s Engine pulling at least one trailer. There will also be a sausage sizzles with cold drinks, tea & coffee for when you feel peckish.

Albany Creek | Australia Day @ The Pool | 9am – 3pm – Come and cool off this Australia Day public holiday with a fantastic day at the pool. There will be games and fun activities, a jumping castle, face painting, water slide, an Aussie BBQ and great prizes to be won.

Mooloolaba | Havaianas Thong Challenge 2014 | 8am – 2:30pm – Ever wanted top part of a new world record? Come down to Mooloolaba Beach and join the 9th Havaianas Australia Day Thong Challenge and see if you can help beat the record for the longest line of giant inflatable Havaianas joined in the water! Palmview | Australia Day Dunny Races @ Aussie World | from 10am – Aussie World and the Ettamogah Pub is definitely the place to be this Australia Day. Starting at 10am with a flag raising ceremony and singing of the national anthem at Ettamogah Pub, the celebrations continue with the famous Dunny Race Championship. There will also be a chance to see some great vintage cars, utes, bikes and caravans on display, or you could grab a bite to eat at Bluey’s Bar & Grill from 11am while listening to some live music. But the fun does not stop there!! Head next door to Aussie World and enjoy over 30 rides and games, including Leak’n Logs, water ride Plunge, the thrill ride Redback and fun Giant Slide to name but a few.

Toowoomba | Australia Day Celebrations @ Highfields Pioneer Village | 9am – 5pm – This year’s Australia Day celebrations at Highfields Pioneer Village are definitely the place to be for the whole family. The day will be jammed packed with fun and activities that will be all about celebrating what it is to be an Australian, including Aboriginal art displays, cow milking, sheep shearing, whip cracking and free Billy Tea and damper. An official ceremony which will include a flag raising by Scouts, Guides and the singing of our national anthem, guest speakers and the singing of Waltzing Matilda. There will also be other great activities get involved in and watch, such as baby animals to pat, a working draught horse, blacksmithing, silversmithing, tinsmithing, great stalls, a sausage sizzle and other yummy food, a great Army display, a didgeridoo performance by Don Nikkelson and lots more.
